Part 1 · The Grammar of Kizir
Kizir (or Kizan) is designed to be melodic, nuanced, and reflective of its speakers' culture.
Phonology & Orthography
The core philosophy of Kizir phonetics is to prioritize sounds that can be spoken softly and held, while avoiding hard, abrupt, or guttural noises.
- Å (å) — a long "oh" sound (e.g., Åsa).
- ' (apostrophe) — used only to separate two adjacent vowels pronounced as separate syllables (e.g., Hani'aia). It is not used to join compounds.
The sound is intentionally melodic and flowing — a cultural preference favoring persuasion and pleasant negotiation over harsh commands, evoking the rustle of wind or the murmur of a spring.
Core Sentence Structure
Kizir uses a fluid Agent–Patient–Verb (APV) order: [Agent] [Patient] [Verb].
Jiro shani sorega. — "The merchant sold the jewel."
Jiro (agent) · shani (patient) · sorega (verb: sold — direct evidence).
This structure is direct and action-oriented, prioritizing the actor and what is acted upon — efficient for a culture of trade and survival.
The Grammar of Nouns
Possession. Possession is marked by a suffix that changes with the possessor. The 1st person (self and guild) uses unique suffixes; for others, the suffix changes based on the noun's category (Animate, Crafted, or Abstract) — a "social grammar" baking the Kiza value system into every sentence.
| Possessor | Pronoun | Animate | Crafted | Abstract |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st singular (my) | An | -ni | -ni | -ni |
| 1st plural (our) | Ani | -nu | -nu | -nu |
| 2nd person (your) | Om/Oma | -ko | -ko | -sa |
| 3rd singular (his/her/its) | Ka | -ka | -ko | -sa |
| 3rd plural (their) | Ka + plural | -kan | -ko | -sa |
Examples: Samini (my child), Kironu (our wolf), Kaelni (my blade), Kaelko (your blade), Shirako (her coin), Ashasa (her hope), Koransa (their mountain).
Plurals: reduplication. To make a countable noun plural, repeat the word — jiro → jirojiro (merchants); kael → kaelkael (blades).
The Grammar of Verbs
Verbs are composed of a root, a mandatory Aspect Prefix (state), and a mandatory Evidential Suffix (proof).
| Aspect Prefix | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ki- | Inceptive — the action is beginning | An kiyori (I am beginning to craft) |
| Ma- | Progressive — the action is ongoing | An mayori (I am crafting) |
| Se- | Perfective — the action is finished | An seyori (I have finished crafting) |
| Re- | Habitual — cyclical or repeated | An reyori (I am a crafter) |
The Evidentials are the heart of Kizir — a trust-and-accountability system built into every verb. For merchants, an evidential is a verbal contract; for loreseekers, the basis of research; for mystics, spiritual authority.
| Evidential | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ga | Direct — saw or heard it directly | Ka luhalga (she walked — I saw her) |
| -ro | Inferred — sees the results | Ka luhalro (she walked — I see footprints) |
| -sha | Reported — was told by someone | Ka luhalsha (she walked — I was told) |
| -åsa | Spiritual — from a dream, vision, or spirit | Ka luhalåsa (she walked — I saw it in a vision) |
Advanced Structures
- Adjectives follow the noun: Kael nesse o (the blade is strong).
- Adverbs precede the verb: Ka kael nesse yorga (he strongly crafted the blade).
- Comparatives use Murli (more), Kiloli (less), Nilali (equally); the object of comparison is marked with Tek (from). Kaelni kaelko tek nesse murli o — "My blade is stronger than your blade."
- Pronouns & protocol. The familiar Om vs. deferential Oma is crucial. Using Oma to a stranger or a Matriarch is standard; Om to a guild-sibling is warmth; Om to a Matriarch is a grave insult.
- Questions. Yes/no adds the particle ka? to the end; information questions place the question word at the beginning.
Noun status is expressed as process, not label, using the verb O (to be) with an aspect: Ka Noromira o (she is the Matriarch), ki-o (Matriarch-elect), se-o (former Matriarch), soma o (Matriarch Emeritus), noro o (the late Matriarch).
Part 2 · Core Cultural Concepts
The Three Castes
- Vira (the Gold Caste) — merchants, artisans, and traders. The economic engine of the guilds, focused on the present.
- Ko (the Obsidian Caste) — loreseekers, scholars, and explorers. The memory of the Kiza, focused on recovering the past (Norsom).
- Lem (the Pearl Caste) — mystics, spiritualists, and diviners. The conscience of the Kiza, focused on the unseen spiritual world and the fated future.
The Social Contract
- Ani'vira'o — the Community Balance; the Kizan social contract. All Kiza are equal, and any contribution, however small, strengthens the community and is of equal value.
- Kala'o — Guild-Fellow, "wheel-spoke." Every guild-mate is an essential spoke that lets the wheel of the guild turn.
- Shani'o — Merit, "sacrifice-worth." Prestige earned through sacrifice and commitment — never material wealth.
- Lani'shon — "Cold Worth," the greatest insult: one who takes from the guild but refuses to sacrifice in return.
Law, Administration & the Quest for History
- Seran'lahn — a single guild's internal traditions. Seranvira'o — the Common Law binding all Kiza guilds, under the Seyasan Aht (High Council). Vira'omaro — legal studies, and the term for any foreign (e.g. Jinjaran) law.
- Ani'aht — the Combine ("The People-Ruler"). Ahtka — a governor. Ahtserai — a capital city. Ahtshira — tax or tribute.
- Norsom — the Unknown History, the Great Amnesia ("the old silence"). Norsomashan — the quest to recover it, the primary drive of the Ko caste. Shomar — known, lived history. Kalan — an unverified legend. Kresh — a lie, a great sin for a loreseeker.
The Rite of the Seeker & the Spirit World
- Noro'lahn — the Dead Path, the Rite of the Seeker. Noro'ka — the Seeker, "the Dead One," considered dead to the guild until they return. Sona — the Boon they must bring back to prove their worth and become a full Kala'o.
- Åsa — spirit/echo, the core spiritual concept. Åsadar — the Spirit Lands. Miranåsa — a birthsign, a fated path imprinted by the six moons (Camir, Tethis, Ri, Fallar, Athha, Ulla) at the moment of birth.
