Voice & Manner

Two modes. On the mud he is easy and plain and talks in oyster terms. In company he is stiff: he borrows Delta’s phrases (“as my wife says”) and lets silences run. When the talk turns to money he names a price too quickly, because a deal is the one kind of talk he is comfortable in. Short sentences in both modes, per The Beds at Dawn.

Voice anchor: a West Country fisherman. Low, slow, the dock never sanded off.

Line to come — Jack’s.

Money

New money. He is good at making it and bad at being rich. He takes any deal that pays, and he keeps buying mud because it is the only thing he knows how to buy. Delta spends it in public; Champ spends it on the gig. The rings are a costume.

Standing

Behind the screen

He rents the warehouse and berths to Sai and thinks nothing is wrong. What Sai pays him to store is what is killing his beds: the pale bed is the casks, and he has not connected the two. The pale bed’s shells are empty — no pearls.

When he learns what the casks carry, it lands as a business loss first, then anger. That is why he wants off the route when the party reach him after session 4.

In a Fight

He does not want one. He leaves, and pays someone.
